Dzogchen Meditation

Explore Dzogchen meditation, recognition and familiarization, and the place of Trekchö and Tögal within a teaching relationship.
Dzogchen Meditation

Dzogchen meditation develops familiarity with the nature introduced through instruction. The teachings point to an empty, lucid nature, and practice allows us to clarify what this means amid the changing movement of experience.

The quality of this familiarity matters. We may become absorbed in stillness, try to preserve clarity, or settle into a vague sense of ease. Learning to discern these experiences belongs within the path.

Recognition and familiarization

Recognition concerns directly recognizing the nature of mind. Familiarization concerns becoming accustomed to that nature and clarifying the ways we lose ourselves in grasping and distraction.

Descriptions can orient us, while instruction helps us understand what to apply. We learn through practice and return to our teacher when experience raises questions. Confidence develops through clarification and familiarity.

What is Dzogchen?
Dzogchen is a direct introduction to primordial buddhahood in the immediacy of our own awareness.

Stillness and movement

Meditation can become associated with a quiet mind. When thoughts resume, we may assume the practice has ended. Dzogchen asks us to examine the nature of experience in movement as well as stillness.

This inquiry concerns more than observing thoughts from a distance. It develops within the instructions received, allowing us to clarify the relationship between awareness and what appears. A restless session can reveal where we are struggling, while an apparently peaceful one can also call for discernment.

How Do You Practice Dzogchen in Everyday Life?
Learn how to practice Dzogchen in everyday life by recognizing awareness and integrating every experience into the path.

The place of Trekchö

Trekchö is commonly rendered as cutting through. Here the name provides an orientation to practice concerned with recognizing and resting in the nature of mind, and releasing the grasping that obscures it.

Its instructions require care and precision. Language about ease or leaving things as they are acquires meaning through direct instruction and clarification. The relevant preparation and way of practicing should be learned within the lineage in which the teachings are received.

The place of Tögal

Tögal is a distinct body of Dzogchen practice concerned with the spontaneous presence of the nature of mind. It involves specialized instructions and conditions of practice.

Its relationship with Trekchö, the preparation required, and the appropriate time to receive instruction are matters for guidance within a particular transmission. A public overview can locate these practices within the path; their application depends on the actual teaching relationship.

These names need not become milestones through which we rank ourselves. What matters is receiving appropriate instruction and applying it with understanding.

Meditation and the whole path

In Advice on the Ultimate Meaning, Longchenpa places meditation alongside compassion, relationship with teachers, and conduct. His account reminds us that the practice concerns the way we live as well as the understanding explored in a session.

Bringing questions into instruction

Useful questions are often specific: What am I doing when I try to rest? Am I becoming dull? How should I work with a particular difficulty? What should I continue between teachings?

Describe your experience plainly, including uncertainty. This gives a teacher something concrete to clarify and helps you return to practice with direction.
